AI pioneer Pupil acquires leading UAE surveying firm

May 23, 2022

Pupil, the global spatial data technology company, has today announced that it has completed a deal to acquire market leading surveying firm AUS-SURV MIDDLE EAST LLC (ASME).

Founded in 2008, ASME specialises in all aspects of property measurement in the UAE. It has completed over 600 high rise and mixed use development projects across Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Pupil expanded into Dubai in 2021, becoming the first business to be granted the status of Certified Surveying Company by the Dubai Land Department for over five years. The acquisition of ASME will facilitate its rapid growth in the region.

Founded by James D. Marshall and Oliver Breach, Pupil has created next generation technology through a five year R&D programme. The business has raised $45 million to date, with a focus on strategic investors and partners to aid its international growth.

Pupil was established in London and expanded to Dubai and New York in 2021. An office was also opened in Singapore in early 2022. This gives Pupil a presence in Europe, MENA, USA and APAC and will be followed by global expansion into an additional 64 cities, delivering Pupil’s technology-driven products to the world’s most influential real estate markets.

Through its products, Spec and Stak, Pupil combines proprietary AI and industrial grade LiDAR scanning hardware to capture millions of points of measurement to document commercial and residential real estate and produce next generation digital twins of the spaces. Through Spec alone, Pupil has digitised over 50,000 buildings in London with a value of more than $50bn.

Pupil’s technology is setting new standards for property measurement accuracy around the world. The company has developed game changing AI and proprietary software to deliver a growing range of verified spatial data products, adding value to the global real estate market worth $327trn.

Through Spec and Stak Verified, its registered trademarks, Pupil has developed the capability to create and sell verified NFTs of properties it captures. It has agreed a deal to produce NFTs for every unit of a landmark development in Dubai, giving buyers the opportunity to own the unique NFT of their property.

James D. Marshall and Oliver Breach, Founders of Pupil, said: “The acquisition of ASME forms an important part of our expansion in the UAE, where we are servicing ever increasing demand from the region’s biggest real estate developers. The UAE is a global leader and we are excited to be at the heart of its continued focus on becoming the world’s most digital-first real estate market.”

Ian Sparks, Managing Director of ASME, said: “ASME is joining Pupil in order to offer its clients the latest technology-backed solutions and the UAE’s most complete end-to-end surveying service.”
